U.S. BLAMES IRAN FOR CYBER-ATTACKS
16/10/2012
U.S. officials said Iranian hackers with government ties are likely responsible for recent distributed denial of service attacks against major U.S. banks as well ascyber-assaults on Persian Gulf oil companies earlier this year.

The U.S. investigators identified the hackers as a group of around 100 Iranian computer-security specialists at universities and network security companies in Iran, who would not have the resources to mount major attacks without the support and technical expertise of the government, according to the New York Times.

Iran dismissed the claims. Tehran launched its own military cyber-unit last year following the discovery of highly-sophisticated computer worms Stuxnet and Flame that targeted its nuclear facilities. Anonymous U.S. officials later confirmed to the Washington Post that the United States and Israel jointly developed the Flame malware to collect intelligence on Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Meanwhile, Israel and Iran blame each other for recent cyber-attacks. While Iranian state officials named Israel and Western countries responsible for attempted cyber-attack on its offshore oil and gas platforms communication networks in the past few weeks, Israeli officials said they are examining a possible Iranian role in the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange and the Israeli airline El Al website disruptions.

The allegations come as the Israeli Cabinet set an early parliamentary election date for January 22, 2013, with current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu leading in the polls.
