Israeli Air Defence boosts capabilities
16/07/2012
Israeli Air Defence units will receive two new advanced defence systems. In early July, Israeli defence industries presented the new interception technologies at a missile defence conference.
These include the “Magic Wand”, a multi-functional defence system, and the Arrow II and III missiles.
The Magic Wand system, sometimes called David's Sling, is a mobile launcher platform that can carry 12 vertical launch missiles, which can cover a 360-degrees spectrum. The platform is controlled
remotely by a Ground Control System.
The system is the result of a joint cooperation between Israeli defence contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and American defence contractor Raytheon and is designed to intercept medium and
long range rockets and cruise missiles.
“The purpose of the system is to be able to deal with everything (…). It can contact all other defence systems and can serve as a platform to operate additional interception systems” explained
Col. Youngman, Rafael’s chief administrator of the Magic Wand and Air Defense department. “The Magic Wand is the system that will function between the ranges protected by the Arrow missiles and
those of the Iron Dome. It will be able to manage interceptions of all types”, he added.
The Arrow ballistic defence systems are developed in Israel in cooperation with Boeing Company. The Arrow III missile, still under development, will be able to intercept ballistic missiles at
higher altitudes than the present Arrow II and target ballistic missiles while airborne.
Missile defence will be the topic of the upcoming SDA roundtable “Next steps in missile defence” in September. Find more information here.
